AI Mock Investment Banking Interview: Practice Out Loud With a Real Interviewer Flow
An AI mock investment banking interview runs the way a real first round does: an interviewer asks a question out loud, listens to your answer, and follows up on what you actually said. At the end you get a report card with a score for every topic, so you know exactly what to drill before the real thing.
Why reading answers is not the same as interviewing
Most candidates prepare by reading guides and flipping through question banks. That builds recognition, not recall. In a real interview there is no answer key on the page, the interviewer interrupts, and the second question depends on how you handled the first. The skill being tested is explaining a concept clearly under pressure, and the only way to build it is to practice that exact situation.
A mock interview closes that gap. You hear a question, you answer from memory, and you get pushed on the weak spot in your answer the way a banker would push you.
How an ApexIB mock interview works
1. Pick a format
First Round (about 30 minutes, four topics),
Superday (longer, more topics, harder follow-ups), or
Custom, where you choose the topics and length yourself.
2. Choose what it covers
Technical only, behavioral only, or a mix the way most real interviews run: your story first, technicals in the middle, fit questions at the end. You can narrow technicals to specific topics (accounting, enterprise value, valuation, DCF, M&A, LBO) and pick a firm so you get a real "Why this firm?" question.
3. Answer out loud
The interviewer reads each question aloud in a natural voice, acknowledges your answer, and moves to a follow-up when your answer leaves something open. A weak DCF answer leads to a harder DCF question, not a random new topic.
4. Get a report card
Every topic is graded on its own, with what you got right, what you missed, and a model answer to compare against. Behavioral answers are graded against your resume if you have uploaded one.
What gets graded
| Question type | What the grader looks for |
| Technical | Correct mechanics, the right order of steps, and whether you can explain why, not just what |
| Follow-ups | Whether you can extend the concept to a new case, like a change in working capital or a different deal structure |
| Behavioral | Structure, substance and delivery, plus whether your story matches your actual experience |
| "Why this firm?" | Specific reasons tied to the firm and to you, not lines that would work for any bank |
How to use mock interviews in your prep
Mocks work best as checkpoints, not as your only practice. A good rhythm is:
- Learn a topic with targeted practice questions until your scores are consistently strong.
- Run a mock that includes that topic to see if it holds up when you are not expecting it.
- Drill what the report card flags. Every weak topic links straight to practice on that area.
- Repeat weekly and watch your score trend on the Performance tab. Your mock and HireVue scores are charted over time, with your weakest technical topic and behavioral category called out.
Treat your first mock as a baseline, not a verdict. Most candidates score lower than they expect the first time, and that gap is exactly what the mock is for.
Mock interviews vs. practicing with a friend
Practicing with a friend or a club member is valuable, especially for delivery. The limits are availability and depth: a peer may not know when an answer is technically wrong, and you can only run so many sessions with the same person. An AI mock is available whenever you are, asks follow-ups based on the content of your answer, and grades consistently, which makes it easy to measure progress from one week to the next. The best prep uses both.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI really run an investment banking mock interview?
Yes, for the parts that matter most in early rounds: asking standard technical and fit questions, following up on gaps in your answer, and grading the content. It cannot replace a live conversation with a banker, but it lets you rehearse far more often than live mocks allow.
How long is a mock interview?
A First Round mock takes about 30 minutes across four topics. A Superday mock is longer with more topics. Custom mocks let you set the number of topics yourself.
Do I have to answer out loud?
Answering out loud is the most realistic practice, and the interviewer speaks every question aloud. You can also type answers when speaking is not practical.
Is there a free mock interview?
Yes. Every account includes a free mock interview, so you can see your baseline before deciding how to prepare.
